History of contemporary Italy (1943-2019) The work presents a summary of the Republic of Italy's journey starting from the end of the Second World War. The post-war decades are recounted and analysed in light of the continuous interactions between internal situations and international contexts: from the origins and dynamics of the cold war, to the creation of the European Union and NATO, from social movements to the global challenges of 1989. A continuous tension between stabilisation and conflict, between the possible evolution of a representative and mass democracy and the constraints of a political system conditioned by structural limits and ancient contradictions. A journey that has its roots in the time of political parties and collective narratives, in defined identities and in the inclusive push of participation, and then takes different paths, accompanied by difficulties and setbacks, by the uncertainties and fears of our time. A story that spans the second half of the twentieth century and part of the new century, marked by ambitious horizons and goals that coexist with embarrassing and difficult chapters. It is the history of the Republic as the legacy and commitment of a national community that questions its own future, the weight of a past that influences and directs, and the choices and directions that have spanned generations of Italians in a journey of over seventy years.

Il volume presenta una sintesi del percorso della Repubblica a partire dalla conclusione del secondo conflitto mondiale. I decenni del dopoguerra vengono raccontati e analizzati alla luce delle continue interazioni tra quadro interno e contesto internazionale: dalla stagione delle origini alle dinamiche della guerra fredda, dalla costruzione europea all’asse atlantico, dai movimenti sociali alle sfide globali del dopo Ottantanove. Una tensione continua tra stabilizzazione e conflitto, tra l’evoluzione possibile di una democrazia rappresentativa e di massa e le strettoie di un sistema politico condizionato da limiti strutturali e antiche contraddizioni. Un itinerario che affonda le radici nel tempo dei partiti e delle narrazioni collettive, nelle identità definite e nella spinta inclusiva della partecipazione per poi prendere strade differenti, accompagnate da difficoltà e battute d’arresto, dalle incertezze e dalle paure del nostro tempo. Una storia che attraversa la seconda metà del Novecento e parte del nuovo secolo segnata da orizzonti e traguardi ambiziosi che convivono con pagine imbarazzanti e difficili. Conoscere la storia della Repubblica come eredità e impegno di una comunità nazionale che s’interroga sul proprio futuro, sul peso di un passato che condiziona e orienta, sulle scelte e gli indirizzi che hanno attraversato generazioni d’italiani in un cammino di oltre settant’anni.
